Grow your tree in a pot

If you would like to grow fruit on your balcony or terrace (in a pot), this requires a little more attention than nursing them in your garden. As the tree is not in the ground, the need for water is larger than in your garden. It is important that the fruit tree has enough water; as the pot heats up more quickly in the summer, water will evaporate faster.

• Make sure that the soil with the fruit tree contains enough moisture. You can easily check this by pushing your finger into the ground and feeling whether the soil is still moist. Simply put, if you squeeze the soil in your hand, it should stay together like a ball. If, when squeezing, water drops out of the pot, the soil is too moist. So, it is important that the water can flow out of the pot, always make sure that there are least 3 holes (the size of a penny at least) at the bottom of the pot.
• It is important that the roots of the fruit tree have enough space to grow, so use at least a 50 liter pot. The larger the pot, the more space the root system of the tree gets to develop. This is reflected in the size of the harvest!
• As a rule of thumb, the ideal size of the pot in which the fruit tree stands should be about half the space that the crown of the tree has (the crown is the upper part of a tree; this includes the trunk and the branches with leaves on them).
• We advise to prune the tree annually to limit growth and stimulate the production of fruit. In other words, by pruning, you will get more flowering, and more flowering will produce more fruits in the autumn. Be careful with frosts in the spring. If the blossom of the tree freezes, it will not bear fruit that year and will instead concentrate on growth. Check the pruning instructions for more information.
• To stimulate the tree’s fructification, you can take the tree out of the pot every year and replace part of the soil with new fresh soil. By refreshing the soil, the root system is stimulated. We also advise you to fertilize the tree after 3 months and preferably if the tree does no longer hold leaves.
